With all the toxins of modern society entering our system, making sure we detox our body from time to time can play a major role in our overall quality of life. Whether it’s polluting smoke or processed fast food, the build-up of toxic compounds in our body may result in inflammation, loss of energy and even the development of certain chronic diseases.

However, there are several effective ways to cleanse your body of these toxins! One of the easiest and most relaxing ways is by taking a detoxifying bath. There exists many different natural detox bath recipes, however, the one I’m sharing with you is one I’ve used with my family in the past. Without further ado, here’s how to make your own detox bath with ingredients easily found at your local grocery store.

Ingredients

The main components of this recipe is actually quite simple: salt! However, any old table salt won’t do the trick here, as you’ll need both sea salt and Epsom salt. Here are the ingredients and measurements:

  • ¼ cup sea salt
  • ½ cup Epsom salt
  • ¼ cup baking soda
  • 15 drops of your essential oils

While you can use any essential oil you’d like, I prefer to avoid floral scented oils, as they tend to aggravate my allergies much more than sweeter smelling oils, like orange. Most Epsom salts purchased at your local grocery store or pharmacy will work well. However, you can purchase Epsom salts specific to detox baths as well.

Instructions

Once you’ve gathered all the ingredients, making the bath is easy! Combine the salt and baking soda into a small pot of boiling water. Once it has completely dissolved, set aside for a few minutes while your bath is being drawn. Once you’ve filled your tub, add in the detox mixture and 15 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Allow yourself to soak in the bath for 20-30 minutes. It’s important to set a timer as it is normal to become overly relaxed and sleepy. On that note, you’re going to want to make sure that you don’t take a detox bath alone at home, in case there is an accident.

While more research is needed to explore the benefits of detox salt baths, people have used salt detox baths to relieve aching and inflamed muscles for thousands of years. Part of this is due to the high magnesium content in the bath, a highly valuable nutrient that is involved with body systems such as muscle and nerve function. Whether you’re an athlete looking to recover for tomorrow’s game or a stressed-out mother of four looking for a relaxing break, detoxing the body with a salt bath can be a simple and effective solution.
